Welcome to Young Roots, the new youth blog from Qutekcak Native Tribe created specifically for the young people of our community.
Young Roots is a space for youth to share what matters to them—their experiences, ideas, accomplishments, culture, creativity, challenges, dreams, and hopes for the future.
This is not a blog where adults speak for young people.
This is a place where young people get to speak for themselves.
Because our youth are not simply the future of our community.
They are part of its voice right now.
Why Young Roots?
The name Young Roots represents two things that belong together: where we come from and where we are going.
Our roots connect us to family.
To community.
To culture.
To traditions.
To the people who came before us.
But roots also allow something new to grow.
Every generation takes what it has been given, adds its own experiences and ideas, and helps shape what comes next.
That is what Young Roots is about.
Staying connected while growing forward.
This Is Your Space
Young Roots will be a place where youth can write about almost anything that matters to them.
Maybe you want to share something about culture or tradition.
Maybe you have something to say about school.
Sports.
Art.
Music.
Gaming.
Fishing.
Hunting.
The outdoors.
Friendships.
Family.
Mental wellness.
Community issues.
College.
A job.
Growing up in Seward.
Something you accomplished.
Something you struggled through.
Something you believe should change.
Or maybe you simply have a story you think someone else needs to hear.
There is no single definition of what a young person's voice should sound like.
Your voice should sound like you.
Your Story Does Not Have to Be Extraordinary to Matter
Sometimes people think their story is not important enough to share.
It is.
You do not have to win a major award.
You do not have to accomplish something enormous.
You do not have to have all the answers.
Sometimes the most meaningful stories are about ordinary moments.
Learning something from a grandparent.
Catching your first fish.
Starting your first job.
Trying something new even though you were afraid.
Learning a cultural tradition.
Helping someone.
Failing at something and deciding to try again.
Moving to a new school.
Finding something you are passionate about.
Figuring out who you want to become.
Your experiences are part of the story of this community.
They matter.
Culture Lives Through the Next Generation
Culture does not continue automatically.
It continues because people carry it.
They learn it.
They practice it.
They talk about it.
They ask questions.
They listen to Elders.
And eventually, they teach someone else.
Young Roots will be a place where youth can explore their connection to culture and community in their own way.
That might mean sharing a tradition you learned.
Talking about something an Elder taught you.
Writing about Native identity.
Sharing artwork.
Talking about food, fishing, subsistence, family, language, history, or community.
It may also mean asking questions.
You do not have to already know everything about your culture to belong to it.
Learning is part of carrying it forward.
Learning From Our Elders
There is something powerful that happens when generations talk to one another.
Our Elders carry experiences young people cannot find on Google.
They remember people, places, traditions, events, and ways of life that may otherwise disappear if those stories are never shared.
Young Roots can help build that bridge between generations.
Youth may interview an Elder.
Ask about childhood.
Ask how Seward has changed.
Ask about family history.
Ask about traditions.
Ask what they wish they had known when they were young.
Then share those stories so another generation can learn from them too.
When young people listen to Elders and Elders make space for young voices, both generations become stronger.
Celebrating What Our Youth Are Doing
Young people in our community are doing amazing things every day.
Some are excelling in school.
Some are athletes.
Some are artists.
Some are working their first jobs.
Some are learning cultural skills.
Some are volunteering.
Some are helping raise younger siblings.
Some are preparing for college or training.
Some are figuring out life one day at a time.
Young Roots will give us a place to recognize those accomplishments.
And we want to celebrate more than trophies, awards, and perfect grades.
Sometimes success means showing up.
Sometimes it means trying again.
Sometimes it means helping a friend.
Sometimes it means graduating when the road to graduation was difficult.
Sometimes it means discovering something you are good at.
Sometimes it means simply refusing to give up.
Those victories count too.
Creativity Belongs Here
Not every story needs to look like an essay.
Young Roots can also be a home for creativity.
Poetry.
Photography.
Artwork.
Short stories.
Personal reflections.
Interviews.
Opinion pieces.
Culture stories.
Book or movie reviews.
Stories about school.
Stories about sports.
Stories about the outdoors.
Youth-created projects.
If you created something you are proud of, we want Young Roots to be a place where it can be seen.
Creativity is another kind of voice.
We Want to Hear What You Think
Adults spend a lot of time making decisions about young people.
Sometimes we forget to ask young people what they think.
Young Roots is an opportunity to change that.
What do you love about your community?
What would you change?
What opportunities do young people need?
What makes it difficult to grow up today?
What makes you proud?
What worries you?
What gives you hope?
What do you wish adults understood?
What should Seward look like for the next generation?
Those are important questions.
And youth deserve to be part of the conversation.
Talking About the Hard Stuff Too
Growing up is not always easy.
Young people today face pressures that previous generations experienced differently—or sometimes did not experience at all.
School pressure.
Social media.
Bullying.
Relationships.
Family challenges.
Mental health.
Substance misuse.
Identity.
Peer pressure.
Planning for the future.
Trying to figure out where you belong.
Young Roots does not have to pretend everything is perfect.
There should be room for honest conversations too.
Sometimes sharing an experience helps another young person realize they are not the only one going through something.
Sometimes one voice gives another person the courage to use theirs.
Your Future Can Take Many Paths
There is no single roadmap for what comes after high school.
College may be one path.
Trade school may be another.
Military service.
A career.
Starting a business.
Working in Alaska.
Leaving Alaska and someday returning.
Learning from family.
Public service.
Healthcare.
Art.
Construction.
Fishing.
Technology.
Teaching.
Tribal leadership.
Something that has not even been invented yet.
Young Roots will share opportunities and stories that can help youth begin exploring those possibilities.
Your future does not have to look like anyone else's.
Young People Can Lead Now
Leadership does not suddenly begin when someone turns 18.
Young people lead every day.
They lead when they stand up for someone.
When they volunteer.
When they help younger kids.
When they speak up about something that matters.
When they take responsibility.
When they bring a new idea to the table.
When they choose kindness when it would be easier not to.
When they become involved in their community.
Young Roots will celebrate youth leadership and encourage young people to understand that their ability to make a difference begins now.
Growing Up in Seward
There are experiences that come with growing up here that someone from somewhere else may never completely understand.
The mountains.
The water.
The weather.
The long summer days.
The dark winters.
The fishing boats.
The wildlife.
The tourists.
The small-town connections.
The moments when it feels like everyone knows everyone.
The beauty.
The challenges.
The opportunities.
The things that make you want to stay.
And maybe the things that sometimes make you want to leave.
Young Roots can capture what it means to experience this community through the eyes of the generation growing up here today.
Years from now, those stories may become part of the history someone else looks back on.
Your Voice Has Power
Words can do something remarkable.
They can teach.
They can challenge.
They can preserve memories.
They can change someone's perspective.
They can make someone laugh.
They can make someone think.
They can make another person feel understood.
They can start conversations.
And sometimes they can start change.
You do not have to be a professional writer to have something worth saying.
You just have to have something you want to share.
Roots and Wings
We want the young people of our community to have both.
Roots strong enough to know where they come from.
And wings strong enough to discover where they want to go.
Those two things do not have to compete with each other.
You can honor where you came from while creating something completely new.
You can learn from previous generations while having your own ideas.
You can carry tradition and innovation at the same time.
That is how communities continue to grow.

Young Roots will grow as our youth contribute to it.
Different ages.
Different interests.
Different personalities.

Different perspectives.
Because there is no single youth experience.
There are many.
And we want this blog to reflect that.

This Is Only the Beginning
There are stories in our community that have not been written yet.
There are young artists whose work we have not seen.

Future storytellers who may not know yet that they are storytellers.
Young people with ideas that could make our community stronger.
